Forgive Yourself When You Mess Up

It’s so easy to go through our lives and forget what we have in front of us. It’s so easy to sweat the small stuff and forget the great stuff.

We will often experience loss and spend some time reflecting on how life is too short, and how we should hug our loved ones more and tell them we love them more. We will say we want to be better about these things, and then 2 seconds later, act completely differently.

Because we are human. I struggle with this myself. I struggle with being present all of the time even though I preach to all of you to be present. I struggle with letting minor things go so that I can enjoy more moments of love rather than anger. This journey is confusing and often messy, but we have to remind ourselves that we truly are only human, we slip up, we will never be perfect, and that is more than okay.

Some days we will be able to show our love and appreciation like it is the easiest thing to do, and others it will feel like pulling teeth. Both are okay places to be. Forgiving yourself when you spend time in those places where it’s hard to stay present and you get angry and say something that maybe you regret, is so important.

I think the lesson I am learning is that it’s so important to hug your loved ones, to tell them how much you love them and how much you appreciate them, despite your past that you’ve had with them. But I am also learning that it is also so incredibly important to hug yourself too. Life is unpredictable, so it’s important to be in a place where no matter what happens, you can forgive yourself, give yourself a hug, and try again. Try to do better, go out more, dance more, laugh more, talk more, or whatever it is for you. Just keep trying. And every time things don’t go the way you thought, try again.

Never lose sight of the fact that you can always begin again. I am forgiving myself step by step. I am learning to relinquish control and I am remembering to hug myself, when things get hard and when I mess up.

So remember to hug your loved ones more, but also remember to hug yourself more too.
